International protection for indications of geographical origin

The authorized user of the indication of geographical origin, or the applicant for the recognition of the status of the authorized user of the indication of the geographical origin can file a request for the international registration on the basis of the Lisbon Agreement through the Office. For the indications for the geographical origin for the agricultural and food products he can file also a request for the registration of the indication of the geographical origin on the level of the European Union.

International registration of the indications of the geographical origin is performed according to the provisions of the Lisbon Agreement on the Protection of the Indications of Origin and Their International Registration from October 31, 1958, with the changes from July 14, 1967 and the amendments from September 28, 1979.

International system of registration of the indications of the geographical origin offers a possibility of the protection of indications of geographical origin in more states and/or international organizations. In the framework of the Lisbon System, one international application replaces a whole serial of applications, which should otherwise be sent to the national offices of the respective countries.
